Step 4: Hang the Legs

Hardware time. You’ll want four 3/8“ × 4“ flat-tip hex bolts (not pointed lag screws) and four 3/8“ wing nuts.

Drill once, drill straight

Use a 3/8“ bit through the frame and leg pivot. Square matters more than speed. A wonky hole means a leg that wanders when someone’s about to sink the game-winner.

Set the stance

Swing the legs out and check height: ~12“ at the back, low end near the ground (~3–4“). Adjust before you call it done.

Fold test

Fold them flat. If they bind, trim the rounded end a hair. These boards should ride in a trunk without needing a forklift certification.

Troubleshooting: wobbly legs

Legs shouldn’t shimmy when a bag lands. If they do:

  • Re-tighten the wing nuts and check that the bolt isn’t ovaling out a soft pine hole.
  • Reposition the pivot slightly if the hole wandered during drill-out.
  • Still soft? Add a short diagonal brace between the leg and the frame so the stance locks in.

Fix wobble now—not after you’ve trash-talked the whole cookout.
